Cost to Participate
There are several expenses associated with being a member of the Newton South Speech & Debate Team.
• Each tournament we attend charges a registration fee for each student who participates. For local (Massachusetts) tournaments, this is generally about $6-$15 per student, per event entered. For the 2022-2023 season, these fees will be paid by the team from funds collected due to fundraising efforts. However, if a student "drops" (decides not to go) after the registration deadline, s/he will be responsible for paying the associated fee because the team is charged for their registration whether or not they end up attending. In addition, tournaments often assign an additional "Drop Fee" for students who drop within 48 hours of the tournament. Students who are registered and who drop after this point are responsible for the drop fees as well. Students may not attend tournaments unless all of their financial obligations to the team have been met.
• When we travel to tournaments out of state, there are costs associated with hotels and transportation in addition to registration fees. Registration fees for travel tournaments generally run about $50-$75 per student per event. Travel fees vary from about $250 (for Yale University) over $1000 for NSDA Nationals. This is largely dependent upon what type of transportation we can use (car, bus, airplane). Clearly, driving is usually far less expensive than flying, but we can't drive to some of the tournament locations. This year NCFLs will be in Louisville, KY and NSDAs will be in Phoenix, AZ. Both require airplane travel and will probably cost between $1000-$1200 per student to attend.
